“Coming Out of the Dark”

~ Gloria Estefan

“We cannot emphasize enough that although the experience of nothingness can be a negative experience, it is actually a crucially positive one. Although a person in the throes of nothingness may experience little that makes sense, this seeming absence of meaning is really a quest for the presence of meaning. The apparent loss of meaning in nothingness is actually an active quest for relatedness and fulfillment. The yearning of loneliness is a search for the intimacy of love; the desolation of aloneness is a springboard to the togetherness of love; the emptiness of depression is a quest for the fulfillment of joy; the change of anxiety is a movement toward the permanence of commitment; the groundlessness of dread is a preparation for the solidarity of courage; the burden of guilt is a summons for the lightness of integrity; the shackles of frustration are a plea for the freedom of autonomy; the heat of anger is a purgation for the coolness of serenity; the lethargy of boredom is a thirst for the vitality of enthusiasm; the lifelessness of apathy is a retreat for the re-entry into life; the pain of anguish is a breakdown for the breakthrough of authenticity.”
